Burdens

For you recall, brethren, our labor and hardship, how working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 1 Thessalonians 2:9

People are suspicious. They have been burned. Paul, Timothy and Silvanus were cautious not to detract from the gospel by working and not becoming a financial burden. That way their motives could be seen as they were – pure. As a result they had a familial relationship with people in the churches. But notice, it was hard work.

I have wondered if there is indeed a higher ethic to be an unpaid minister as opposed to a paid one. Perhaps its not a higher ethic, its simply a lowering of the distrust threshhold. In other words, if I am paying my own way (so to speak), people open their hearts more quickly to me and the gospel I share. Interesting.

Lord, since I am a hybrid or bi-voc as my friend Todd likes to say. Help me represent You and work with the strength You provide. Help me not grab onto feelings of being better than, anyone else. Help me avoid entitlement attitudes. Jesus, You are my goal, my example, and my counselor. I want to be more like You today.
