“Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ, John answered and said to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Luke 3:15-16
John the Baptist was the greatest born among women. Yet in comparison to Jesus, he was unworthy or unfit to untie Jesus’ sandal. What a great understanding John had of who he was, and who Jesus is. I love that Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Do I have a proper understanding of who I am? Do I overestimate my own importance? Who could have been more important that the forerunner of the Messiah? Yet, he was humble about his relation to Jesus. Bold with people regarding the need to repent, but humble. Wow.
Lord Jesus, help me understand who I am in your kingdom and purpose in the world. Help me be crystal clear about that. But also help me remember you are the Savior of the world, not me. You bring the fire!
