Worth More Than Gold

If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

My son is looking to buy land or a house. He was asking, how do you know what something is worth? Well, its a tricky question isn’t it. The simple answer is “it’s worth what the next person is willing to pay for it” = market value. But, we all know somethings have intrinsic or sentimental value far beyond what the market would recognize. Have you ever wondered what you are worth?

When I was a teenager I visited the science and history museum in Los Angeles. On a display table were all the elements, minerals, etc. that can be found in a human body (with the exception of water). Purchased in the marketplace the cost was less than $100 bucks. Huh, I thought, that’s all, I am worth.

The good news is that God weighed in the matter of value and worth and says you are worth more than gold. He was willing to ‘pay’ (through the sacrificial death of His own Son, Jesus) with the precious blood of Christ. Wow! As valuable as gold may be, in comparison to Jesus’ blood, it is just like any other perishable commodity. This should produce in me a great reverence (fear) for God as I live out my days on earth.

What sense of value to I ascribe to myself? Is it consistent with that which God has placed on my life? In my life, is there a noticeable reverence for God my Father, life, and the life to come?

God in heaven and in my heart, as this day begins- I am grateful that I can relate to You as my Heavenly Father. As your son, may I be pleasing in Your sight. May I revere Your very name so much so that I always rise up to defend Your the honor due You. May I live out my days in such a way as I bring glory to heaven and one day join all the saints in that place in Your very presence.
