Why?

I am with people who suffer tragedies. Some are of epic proportions like the unexplained loss of a child at birth or an unexpected accident that takes the life of a godly person. The family members will inevitably contemplate the biggest question- Why? Why do bad things happen to seemingly very good people. They do! Even though I have studied the Bible for 40+ years, I cannot give the perfect and well fit answer, because I don’t know. What I do offer is the absolute hope we have in Christ and the assurance of a reunion with those who go before us, in Christ, who have entered the next life in the presence of God. Solomon said, what I have pondered, “How do people do it… how do they live with such profound loss without a faith in God?” He said, the best they can do is to Eat, Drink, and be Merry- which will at least placate them and allow them to follow asleep somewhat numb to the pain and confusion. For me, and believers in Jesus, we know that God is still in control and that this life is the shorter side of eternity. What we miss out on here, God will make up for, there! We have hope that will one day be realized. We have faith that one day will be sight! We grieve, but not as those without hope. So, we can look beyond merely eating, drinking and making merry. We can look to God the maker of heaven and earth knowing our Redeemer lives and we will see Him.

There is futility which is done on the earth, that is, there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked. On the other hand, there are evil men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I say that this too is futility. So I commended pleasure, for there is nothing good for a man under the sun except to eat and to drink and to be merry, and this will stand by him in his toils throughout the days of his life which God has given him under the sun. Ecclesiastes 8:14-15 NASB

Can I live in this world without the answers to why tragedies happen? Do I really believe God can redeem everything and anything in the next life?

God, as this day begins- I pray You would be very real and close to those suffering loss. Thank you for the promises of scripture, the reality that Jesus rose from the dead, and the eternal purpose of loving You and others that makes life more than just to eat, drink and be merry. Would you work within me today to reach out and love someone in your name? Give me strength, insight, wisdom, and an overflow of joy to share with all I meet.
