Who Made the First Move?

firstmoveThere is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us. 1 John 4:18-19

The Bible says that God reached out with His love to us first. Then in response, we accept what Jesus has done on the cross and love permeates our entire life. But, the first act belongs to God. You could say it is the antecedent event. The letter to the Romans puts it this way… “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly”. One great benefit of this love relationship is that we no longer walk in fear of judgment, knowing Jesus paid the penalty on the cross.

When did I respond to God’s great love? It was back in my teen years. God was working in my life and at age 18, I stepped out and declared publicly that I would follow Jesus Christ. Do I fear judgment? No, for I know in whom I have believed. While I am not perfect in thought and deed, I have received the perfect love of God.

Lord Jesus, I know that You command me to share this love with those who also are in the faith, with strangers, and even with enemies. May the great love of God extend into my life and flow to others today. Amen.
