Who is Carrying Who?

Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob, all the remnant of the people of Israel,
you whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born.
Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am he, I am he who will sustain you.
I have made you and I will carry you. I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:3-4

I love the pictures of valiant soldiers carrying their wounded comrade across their back, bringing them to rescue. God does that for us. What a contrast to the idols of Babylon that the people carried, sometimes with the help of beasts of burden. This is the truth, that idols become a burden. Contrary to that, God carries us… and He has done if from cradle to grave. What an amazing revelation and reminder. He made us for His good pleasure and He sustains us every day.

How do I respond to such an insight? I certainly put away the idols that weigh me down, that I carry upon my back, or the ones that trail behind me on a beast of burden. And, I trust and thank Him for the burden I am to Him and that He carries me.

Lord Jesus, You carried the weight of the world upon your shoulders when You bore the penalty for our sins. And daily you sustain and carry me through by the power of Your indwelling Holy Spirit. When I say ‘you are in my heart’, I certainly mean more that that can convey. I feel you are with me and you lead and guide me throughout the day. Thank you that this is the best way to live.
