Where Should I Sit?

It feels good to be praised, recognized and honored. But desiring that kind of attention is a spiritual trap. One time my wife and I were at a wedding reception and the funny thing is that we were moved from a prominent table (near the bride and groom) to a “less important” table. It turned out awesome because the people at Table 9 were single adults who knew each other for years from church and we laughed and enjoyed each other’s company the entire night. There is something very attractive about humility and ugly about pride. Both Solomon taught us a better way and Jesus echoed it and exemplified it! When you are humble, God will lift you up!

Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence and do not claim a place among his great men; It is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,” than for him to humiliate you before his nobles. Proverbs 25:6-7 NIV But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 14:10-11 NIV

From where do I seek praise and affirmation most… from God or men? Do I truly trust God that if I take second place, in due time, He will exalt me?

God, as this day begins- Oh, I am thinking about the phrase “fly under the radar” of men’s notice, realizing You see everything and me included. Oh I pray that for a couple friends, today will mark a breakthrough- Joleen with health in every way, Fran with confirmation of her new apartment, and healing for the hurt of those experiencing divorce. God You are gracious to hear my prayers. Please answer in Your wisdom and power. I pray for Judy as well, that there will be an answer to her breast cancer. Show me how to best set my schedule this week to be available to others and attentive to their needs. And God I praise you for the Thomas’ anniversary week. Give them great joy.
