I enjoy a fair amount of freedom in my life. Sure, I have responsibilities,… what adult doesn’t? But, I can go where I want, say what I want, and eat and drink just about anything. There is a self-imposed limit to my freedom which is refraining from what might prevent others from coming to Christ and being saved. Every believer is in the world as a redeemed “reconciler” helping others to be saved. What would you do, or not do, to see someone saved? Sometimes we elevate the importance of our freedom and minimize the mandate to make disciples. The apostle Paul reminded the Corinthians with clarity about this very issue.
But if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of that one who informed you and for the sake of conscience; Now by “conscience” I do not mean your own, but the other person’s; for why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered about that for which I give thanks? Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all things for the glory of God. Do not offend Jews or Greeks, or the church of God; just as I also please everyone in all things, not seeking my own benefit but the benefit of the many, so that they may be saved. 1 Corinthians 10:28-33 NASB
What freedoms do I cling to too tightly that needlessly offend others coming to Christ? What wisdom can I gain from Jesus’ life and that of Paul as well?
God, as this day begins- I am reminded that Christ was in the world reconciling the world to God. He has given me a ministry of reconciliation. May I fulfill my ministry with wisdom and in concert with the Holy Spirit. I pray this morning for my family and closest friends, that You would be near and guiding each one. What a day ahead!
