“Husen, You Stink!” Those are the words my brother Jimbo and I would hear from our beloved coach Gallardo if we dropped a pass during football practice. Both Jim (Dr. James Husen Jr. to his colleagues) were wide receivers. He was number 81 and I was 80. At age 12 or 13 I have to admit I was a little afraid of our coach because he was intense, but excellent. The result was that we became pretty good and would do anything to catch a pass in a game. The beloved apostle Paul said that Christians stink! Ok, that’s harsh. We spiritually smell either pleasant or offensive. To those being saved (responding positively to the gospel) its as if we are the beautiful fragrance of Jesus. But, to others, we simply remind them of an empty life and Christless eternity. I think the worst thing is when we don’t smell at all.
But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us reveals the fragrance of the knowledge of Him in every place. For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing: to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 NASB
How apparent is my faith in God to others in daily living? Am I worried about other people’s reaction?
God, as this day begins- Oh I pray that You would lead me and work within me and through me to accomplish Your will in Your way. I pray for those ‘being saved’. May the sweet smell of a loving Savior draw them to You and into Your kingdom. Make my life a testimony of Your goodness and grace as I experience the joy of Your salvation. Let’s stink it up.
