I have often wondered why the burning bush was not consumed? Is there a message for Moses contained in the miracle and phenomena? Or was he experiencing something rather common and natural? Joe Schwarcz PhD has hypothesized that “the Dictamnus albus plant, found throughout northern Africa is a candidate for the burning bush. In the summer, the plant, also known as the “gas plant,” exudes a variety of volatile oils that can catch fire readily and may give the impression that the bush is burning. So was Moses witnessing the combustion of a mix of terpenes, flavonoids, coumarins and phenylpropanoids?” Perhaps the message is this: God took notice of the suffering of his people (burning bush experiences) and He was now ready to rescue them (they would not be consumed), but rather be brought into the promised land. God wants to meet us in our suffering and prevent us from ‘being consumed’. Let’s work with Him to that end. By the way, notice the Angel of the Lord (pre-incarnate Christ) was right there in the midst of it. And it was a marvelous sight.
The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, “I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.” Exodus 3:2-3 NASB
What fires are attending my life? What struggles and suffering are others enduring? How can I be like Moses, a person used by God to deliver others?
God, as this day begins- Its another day to reach out and love someone in Your name. I am aware of many who are in the fire as they see their loved one’s health decline, as they lack the money to pay bills, and as mental illness and discouragement affect people they love. You are the answer. I know this. Would You be very real and present with each and send Christians into their lives to sustain them and walk them forward. By Your mercy and grace, don’t let them be consumed.
