What Did I Do To Deserve This?

O Lord my God, if I have done this, if there is injustice in my hands,
If I have rewarded evil to my friend,
Or have plundered him who without cause was my adversary,
Let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it;
And let him trample my life down to the ground
And lay my glory in the dust.  Selah.  Proverbs 7:3-5

Ever felt like ‘the other shoe’ was about to drop? Sometimes I see the consequences of my actions or get a sense that my sin and missteps have caught up to me. Enemies are pursuing and I deserve what is about to come upon me. What a great starting point for clarity and opportunity for growing in God’s grace. When I realize (as David did) that if injustice is in my hands and I have done evil to a friend, it should trouble my soul. Fortunately, for followers of Christ, we can find forgiveness from God and offer restitution to those we’ve wronged and be free of guilt. Its then, and maybe only then, can we say “Vindicate me, O Lord, according to my righteousness and my integrity that is in me,” verse 9.

How is God’s grace growing in me? Is integrity growing proportionally?

God, examine me and reveal to me anyone I have wronged. Are enemies that I have created pursuing me? I confess that I am not without sin. Forgive me of undone debts of labor I owe others and any wrong judgments I have made about people. Now, I will walk in integrity by the grace and goodness You impart. Let’s go take on the day. There is so much good to do!
