Vicarious Atonement

Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:4-6

One of the great doctrines and essential beliefs of Christians is that ‘Jesus died for me’. His death upon the cross was a substitution for the death I deserve. This is why the saying is true: Good people don’t go to heaven, forgiven people do.

How is my understanding and appreciation for what Jesus has done for me? I believe my understanding is limited, but my appreciation is huge. Tears come when I consider the cross and His great sacrifice and what it has afforded me.

On this Sabbath day Lord, I am once again grateful for Jesus and His death upon the cross. While it pleased You to do this, the eternal gratitude will be mine.
