To Be Like Apollos

One of my goals in life is to be ‘proficient in the Scriptures’. I had the opportunity to have some University education in the Bible. I will always be grateful for particular professors at Hope International University like Dr. Joe Grana, Leroy Lawson, etc. The truth is that most of my theological and philosophical training has been “in the trenches” and learned by reading, listening, studying and self-taught. Never to discount the value of a formal education, I have come to believe that a dedicated Christian guided by the Holy Spirit is University level education. One of my joys is to help any man learn and live according to the Bible. Not an easy thing in today’s world, but essential for all of us who want to live a life pleasing to the God who made us. Apollos was just that same sort of person. He influenced many for the sake of Christ. We need more apostle Paul’s and Apollos’ as well, don’t we?

Now a Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus; and he was proficient in the Scriptures. This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was accurately speaking and teaching things about Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism of John; and he began speaking boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately to him. And when he wanted to go across to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him; and when he had arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating by the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ. Acts 18:24-28 NASB

How diligent am I these days in growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ by study of scripture? What have I learned of Him lately and to whom am I passing it along?

God, as this day begins- I pray I might make a difference in someone’s life as I reach out and love them in Jesus’ name. Help me used all You’ve taught me and that I’ve learned for Your glory, not vainglory. Who have you placed in my life that I might share my love of scriptures? K-bear, Carty, Avery,…? For sure my grandchildren. Help me impart to them a love for the Bible and love for You!
