To An Unknown God

I didn’t have the advantage of growing up in church. Although my childhood was pretty dog gone great, that’s one advantage I lacked. I was curious about life, purpose, meaning, eternity, God, and the like, but there were plenty of other things to do and build my life upon. I could honestly say that my idols were built in ignorance to ‘an unknown god’. How amazing it was at age 18 to discover the maker of heaven and earth, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,… the God of the Bible and that He sent His Son into the world so that He could be known, loved and worshipped. Now, ‘in Him’, I live and move and have my being, and yes, I am His descendant- born again through the sacrificial life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. I no longer serve an unknown God, for He is known and I have set my life’s purpose to make Him known to all. You could say, I am just one beggar telling other beggars, where I have found bread. Which God are you worshipping today?

So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in all respects. For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything that is in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made by hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might feel around for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His descendants.’ Acts 17:22-28 NASB

How did I come to know God? What am I doing to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus and God, my Heavenly Father?

God, as this day begins- I marvel and how blind I was groping for something, anything of true value and meaning apart from You. Thank you for revealing Yourself and Your great love through Jesus and the scriptures. May I reach out and love someone in Your name today and impart the life-saving knowledge of the Son of God to someone today. Please be real and close to the family at the memorial service I am officiating today.
