They Seem Coincidental

Someone asked me what the best part of summer has been? I answered, camping with lifelong friends and surfing for a week at San Onofre. I think that good friendship are formed in a rather coincidental way, they just happen, you can’t really script them. My friend David and I met in kindergarten in a sandbox on the playground. You can’t really look at someone and say- hey, we are going to be friends. Instead, some circumstance draws you together and you just ‘click’. Of course, you have to be rather purposeful to maintain the connection. Wise king Solomon talked about how friends can give you heartfelt advice. In other words, they care about you enough to tell you what you really need to hear and they won’t let you down or leave you hanging when you really need each other. Aside from my lovely wife, these friends are pure gold. I wonder if you have friends.

Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice. Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family and do not go to your relative’s house when disaster strikes you— better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away. Proverbs 27:9-10 NIV

What friends has God appointed in my life? How have I been a friend to them?

God, as this day begins- I thank you for Vince, Peter, Dan, David, Michael, Joe, Charlie, JR, Jim, Chris, Jonathan, Galen, brother Brad and Jimbo, and the handful of others that You have afforded me. Each one seems to have come into my life in a coincidental way. I wonder what I might do today to be an encouragement to one of them. While a man of many friends may come to ruin, there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. May I be like that!
