The Imitation Of Christ

Many years ago I read the book The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis (15th century). It is a foundational Christian devotional, stressing inner spiritual life over external ritual, emphasizing humility, detachment from worldly distractions, and the imitation of Christ’s virtues. For me, it was an invitation to slow down and allow God to do the deepest work within me, as I was preparing to do work for Him. Understanding that Jesus is both our source and goal, helps us understand our role and the limitations of it. When I realize that God does the “heavy lifting” and I have the smaller humble obedience part- my experience is that the kingdom of God expands and His work in the world is accomplished. In a similar way, within the marriage context, we have something to learn about headship and roles as well. I confess I don’t fully understand it. The apostle Paul wanted the believers in Corinth to understand it. As we grow in knowledge, let’s all be imitators of Christ!

Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I handed them down to you. But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and he man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1-3 NASB

In what ways does my life reflect Christlikeness? How am I fulfilling the “headship” in my marriage relationship?

God, as this day begins- I thank you that sitting right next to me is my cutie 2 year old granddaughter. Please help me understand afresh the power and sincere devotion of simply being ‘like Chirst’ and imitating Jesus in word, thought and deed.
