But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. 1 Timothy 4:1-3
The danger of apostasy has always been present in the church. Today, however, it seems that truth is rare, false teaching prevalent, and many have walked away from the church and even the God who purchased them. The Spirit of God put that reality upon the heart of Paul, who in turn warned Timothy of its impending reality. Many of the doctrine that are contrary to the gospel have their origin in the unseen world of the demonic. Those promulgating the false teachings are often marked by hypocrisy and deceit, though they are passionate about their aberrant teachings. Part and parcel of their teaching are cult-like restrictions on basic God ordained institutions like marriage and the freedom to eat certain foods. These days, we need God’s word taught clearly from our pulpits. There is no time to waste.
