The Certainty Of God’s Kingdom

There are so many aspects of life that are uncertain. The length of our life, the stock market, traffic on the 91 freeway, even… how our kids will turn out. We must live with a certain degree of it. However, there is one thing for certain. The kingdom of God will come! I have been puzzled by Jesus comparisons to the kingdom for many years. He says its like a mustard seed that becomes a tree. Its like a woman who put leaven in flour. Bible commentators have tried to analogize these sayings pointing out that “birds” are bad (represent evil), that “leaven” is sin, etc. I think they miss the obvious. A mustard seed fulfills its purpose in becoming a tree in which birds nest. Leaven fulfills its purpose when the entire dough is leavened and will therefore rise when baked. In the same way, the kingdom of God will be fulfilled. Jesus prayed, ‘thy kingdom come, they will be done, on earth as it is in heaven’. This begs the question: where is the kingdom of God now? Answer: wherever God is king. He is king of my heart, my home, my life. How about you?

So He was saying, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it?  It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches.” And again He said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?  It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three sata of flour until it was all leavened.” Luke 13:18-21 NASB

What part of my heart, home, or life is not subjected to His influence and rule? What can I do today to see God’s kingdom grow in me, around me, and through me?

God, as this day begins- I have a handful of tasks on my calendar. I give You full permission to re-orient any of them. Thank you that You brought me into Your kingdom. May my heart be completely Yours today in every way.
