The Advantage

advantageI will bless the Lord who has counseled me;
Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.
I have set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will dwell securely.
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol;
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever. Psalm 16:7-8

Sometimes when I meet new people, we swerve into a conversation about our upbringing. I will ask “did you have the advantage of growing up in the church?” I love phrasing it that way because it really can be an advantage. Sadly, some who had that advantage discount it. I do not. Faith in Christ came to me at the age of 18. In the short time of 18 years I found plenty of ways to offend a holy God and get lost on the way. I love the psalmist recognition of all the advantages of knowing God. Counsel, instruction, unshakeable, gladness, rejoicing, security, fellowship, direction, and fullness of joy. Wow!

Am I thankful for God and the advantage of knowing Him? Yes.

Lord Jesus, You made it all possible by Your sinless life, sacrificial death, and powerful resurrection. Please counsel me and instruct me, even as you do each day. This day belongs to You, may I be of service.
