Straying From The Truth

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some.
Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.” 2 Timothy 2:17-19

Christians get caught up in silly arguments at times. The antidote is to accurately handle the word of truth. Paul warned Timothy not to go astray from the Truth of God’s word and get sucked into empty chatter which usually has its origins in worldly topics. When we stop focusing on the Word of God, we can find ourselves in great error, as did Hymenaeus and Philetus who somehow thought the resurrection had already taken place. Perhaps their doctrine had even spread to Thessalonica where believers became concerned about the same thing. Ughh, bad doctrine based on worldly philosophy or current events instead of the Bible spread fast, like gangrene. We must be diligent to present ourselves not approved by men, but by God.

How influenced am I to get caught up on idle and empty chatter? How susceptible to false doctrine am I?

God, I desire to be a workman approved by You, never ashamed, as I hold out the word of truth. Give me insight and wisdom to understand the holy scriptures and especially Your mind on all things. As this day begins, may You lead and guide me moment by moment. I do thank you for the veterans who have served our country with valor and courage.
