Strange Birthday Gift

You’ve heard people say “I speak truth to power”… right? You know who spoke truth to power? John the Baptist! For whatever reason, Herod the Tetrarch gave heed to John’s criticism of his treacherous adulterous behavior and had him arrested. Herod wanted tacit approval from any Jewish influencer to side with him and when he didn’t get it, he erupted in anger. So, as history records- seeking to please his guests and seduced by a young girl’s dancing, he had John beheaded as a birthday gift. Pure evil. One thing can be said of John- he walked with integrity.

But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod, so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. And after being prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” And although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths and his dinner guests.  He sent word and had John beheaded in the prison. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. John’s disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus. Matthew 14:6-12 NASB

How prepared am I to stand up for righteousness when necessary? What convictions do I truly hold?

God, as this day begins- There is a joy in my heart. What a day that lies ahead. May I be your useful servant bringing light and love to all I meet. Thank you that I will see my cutie grandkids today and that I am working with my daughter this morning. What a gift these family relationship are to me. May my son Keanu (living out of state) know we miss him dearly.
