Strains On Marriage (And Other Relationships)

Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? 2 Corinthians 6:14-17

Paul gives five examples supporting his warning about being bound together with unbelievers. He contrasts righteousness with lawlessness, light and darkness, Christ with Belial, believer with unbeliever, temple of God and idols. What is he getting at? He is saying that partnerships, like those in business and marriage will have an added strain when one person is a believer in Christ and the other is not. Why? Because the believer will be pulled toward godliness and heaven. Their thinking is influenced by the Spirit of God. More simply put, their focus and direction is in the complete opposite direction of an unbeliever. That will eventually put a strain on a relationship of any kind: marriage, business, or otherwise.

Have I entered into any entangling alliances with unbelievers? Am I expecting too much from unbelievers?

God, as this day begins may You be worshiped in our midst and in my heart. Reveal any areas of my life that I am partnering with unbelievers.
