Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They *said to Him, “The son of David.” He *said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying, The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet”?
If David then calls Him Lord, how is He his son?” No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question. Matthew 22:41-45
The religious leaders were constantly trying to get Jesus to say something unlawful, uncaring, or unacceptable. Finally, Jesus asked them a simple question that silenced his critics. What was the question? He asked them the identity of the Messiah,… is the Messiah human or Divine? They knew the scripture pointed to His divinity in David’s psalm and they knew the people believed Jesus to be the Messiah. What they couldn’t reconcile is their own response to Him. They were unwilling to recognize Him as Lord.
When did I recognize Jesus as Lord of my life? Some 34 years ago and every day since. How willing and equipped am I to answer the critics of Jesus today?
God, thank you for the wisdom of Jesus Christ that confounds the critics, especially the religious ones. As I think about the tasks ahead today, the learning, the interaction with others, the prayers that will be prayed, I place myself before Your throne. Purify my heart, forgive all sin, empower me by Your Spirit to walk through this day.
