silenceThe women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church. Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only? 1 Corinthians 14:34-36

How in the world do I apply this new testament writing today? What is the apostle Paul saying? I was reflecting on this passage today and it led me to read some commentaries from pastors and teachers I trust. Whether this is a once for all, literal command or the solution to a local problem then and there is the first discernment I am seeking. The preceding passage reminds us that God is not a God of confusion. That along with the entirety of the book of Corinthians and the occasion for writing lead me to believe that Paul was solving a problem in the church. It was a church ‘gone wild’! They had so many problems that needed addressing and this appears to be one more… women who were disturbing the church worship service in the same manner as those who wanted to prophesy and use their spiritual gifts in a chaotic manner. One helpful observation, we know women were participating by praying in the church… chapter 11 verse 5. What is worth considering is that God does have a creative order and roles, responsibilities and authority that He ordains.

Am I an asset to my wife in her spiritual growth? How am I bringing order and meeting needs within the life of the church?

Lord, what a great reminder that You care so much about how we treat one another and that You desire us to grow in our faith. May I be in harmony with You as You grow and lead us to make Crossroads the wonderful environment where Jesus is exalted and people grow in the grace and knowledge of our Savior.
