Ready For Use

Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries. But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. 1 Corinthians 14:1-3

Paul says that if love is the goal, using our gifts will be for the building up of others within the church. A practical result is we should desire to prophesy (speak forth the Word of God) more than speak in tongues (a language unknown to the speaker) that edify ourselves. Sometimes we enter into a worship service thinking we are “on display” for others to see, instead of entering with an attitude of being “ready for use” and to serve others.

How do I look at the body of Christ and my role within it? Am I “on display” for my own edification? Or am I “ready for use”?

Lord, as this day begins, help me be a vessel of honor, ready for use.

Spirit of the Living God
by Daniel Iverson
Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me.
