Pray Continually – a Command and Invitation

PrayContinuallyAlways seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:15-17

If you want to memorize Bible passages, there are three easy ones: “Jesus wept” – John 11:35 as well as 1 Thessalonians 5:16 “Rejoice always” and its companion in verse 17 “pray continually”. Even better than memorizing them is living them out. Imagine having a heart of compassion like Jesus. What would happen if you were always rejoicing and your day was a constant conversation with God in prayer?

How has the Spirit of God made me like Jesus in these ways? On the rejoicing, I do pretty good. Compassion is growing. Praying is more like five phone calls to a friend than a constant conversation.

God, when our pastor says “You have nothing better to do than spend time with us”, I am humbled that You really are available and desiring a conversation with me. Forgive me for neglecting something so precious. Prompt me moment by moment as I make my way through this day to include and listen to You. I love you, Lord Jesus.
