I heard that today the “food stamps” (old term), Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) funding is in jeopardy and people may not be able to use their card to buy groceries! Congress’ inability to fund a continuing resolution has resulted in a shutdown with only certain federal agencies receiving money. I am especially sympathetic to those experiencing food insecurity. Thank God we have food at Crossroads available without cost (Project Hope food pantry). If that’s you, please come. We will provide food for two weeks at a time for a family of four. Meanwhile, the courts may step in (along with help from President Trump). CNN reported a post by Trump: “If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding, just like I did with Military and Law Enforcement Pay.” Oh SNAP, I hope so. Jesus, filled with compassion, miraculously set a precedent for believers to meet the needs of people in this way.
Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard about this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. When He came ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.
Now when it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is secluded and the hour is already past to eat; send the crowds away, so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go; you give them something to eat!” They said to Him, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish.” And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” And ordering the crowds to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looked up toward heaven. He blessed the food and breaking the loaves, He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces: twelve full baskets. There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children. Matthew 14: 13-21 NASB
God, is there anyone in my circle of influence that needs my help, wealth, attention this week?
God, as this day begins- I thank You for Your goodness. May Christians and Christian churches rise up to meet the need of the day by loving people one at a time in Your name. Work miracles as You have in the past. God bless America with compassionate hearts and care for the poor.
