Sometimes as a preacher/pastor I might begin a sermon with a strange “on ramp”. I might say something provocative that captures everyone’s attention. I think that’s pretty common amongst public speakers in general or even influencers. The apostle Paul got my attention as I read a letter in which he wrote about a number of “concerns” to the believers in Corinth (modern day Greece). He started his thoughts with “Now, concerning virgins…” He had my attention. More importantly, he had their attention as he described the priority in life was Christ. And whatever external difficulty and problems they faced (widespread famine, persecution, etc.), they were not to have divided loyalties. Remember the formula: Hard times + Divided Responsibilities = Added Difficulty. Following Jesus example and command is hard enough. Be ready for the trouble ahead and be content in your present condition!
Now concerning virgins, I have no command of the Lord, but I am offering direction as one who by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy. I think, then, that this is good in view of the present distress, that it is good for a man to remain as he is. Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife. But if you marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. 1 Corinthians 7:25:38 NASB
What major changes are ahead for me? How will they affect my loyalty to Christ and His cause?
God, as this day begins- I feel it often. The cares of this world can pull me from full devotion. Guard my mind. Recalibrate my priorities. Make me a useful vessel for Your glory. And thank you that I got to marry my virgin and now have the beautiful family to enjoy and bless. Whatever troubles come, I am grateful for what I have in You.
