Lost In Materialism

materialismNo one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say,
“Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate.
Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left?
Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”

Such a person feeds on ashes; a deluded heart misleads him; he cannot save himself, or say,
“Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?” Isaiah 44:19-20

How ironic that many people use the very resources God has made available to sustain life. Then they take the remainder and create idols. This is the human condition when the heart is deluded by worldly thinking. So many people are lost because of materialism. The antidote is coming into a right relationship with God and living a life of giving and generosity. Remember, the second command is like the first. Have no idols. (The first, have no other gods before me).

Has materialism captured my heart in any way? Am I bowing down to the resources (or things) that God has placed in this world instead of bowing down to Him?

Lord Jesus, I was thinking about money today because of an email I received. What Andrew Murray says is so true, You watched the gifts being placed in the temple treasury – You watch! Help me be more concerned with giving money than getting money. Thank you for everything You have placed in my life. Help me always have your mind on things like this. Since its Sunday, I pray that many will come to church and join me in worshiping You with all our heart, mind and strength. Add to the church today, those who are being saved.
