Leave The Garbage Behind

garbageBut whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.
What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.
I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. Philippians 3:7-9

The Apostle Paul did some reflection upon his former religious life and experience. He thought he was doing so well, but he could not have been further off track. He was trying to justify himself by keeping the law. Having a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ changed his entire value system. He now saw all the former attempts at holiness, that were based on his efforts, as a waste. Everything pales by comparison, to the surpassing knowledge of Christ Jesus. Why? Because we find ourselves for the first time in a right relationship with God that is real and personal and purposeful. To enjoy it, we must leave the garbage behind.

What about me? What have I left behind to follow Christ?

God, the greater part of what I left behind is worldly and selfish thought and activity. I didn’t have a religious upbringing based on rules and keeping the law. I am grateful for the salvation I have received. Thank you for the amazing answer to prayer You brought about last week. Oh, I ask again that You will be with me, providing wisdom and insight in my decision making. Do more that I could ask or imagine. Thank you for moving on people’s hearts to serve You in our school. I love what You are doing… its beyond me.
