Knowing Him

Have you met people who talk as if they know God in a personal way? I thought that was rather curious, odd, and bit bold as well. Today, I almost take it for granted because its become my experience. Can someone really know Him? And if so, is there any evidence? John the beloved apostle says this is how we know we have come to know Him… that we keep Jesus’ commands and love the brethren. Hmmm- sounds a little like the two great commands: love God with heart, soul, mind and strength (by keeping his commands) and love our neighbor (brothers) as ourselves. Brilliant. Who would know better than John, Jesus’ closest earthly friend. Let’s endeavor to know God for this is the chief end of man.

By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever follows His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says that he remains in Him ought, himself also, walk just as He walked. 1 John 2:3-5 NASB

Does my life show evidence that I have come to know Him? Am I clear that actually knowing Him (through prayer, devotion, obedience, and worship) is a reward in and of itself? Am I striving to look like I know him (by keeping His commands as a way of justifying myself), or am I walking in the Spirit being transformed with His power from the inside out?

God, as this day begins- I have some promises to keep, some work to accomplish and not enough time to succeed. But, with Your guidance, brilliance, energy and love, may I be and accomplish all you desire. In Jesus name. I desire to walk as Jesus walked.
