Knowing God

I know quite a bit more about God than when I first was introduced to Christianity back in 1980. Moreover, I know Him. Of course, I don’t know everything about Him! Who does? I do have access through prayer to Him. He gives me thoughts beyond my own. His Spirit dwells within me and leads and guides throughout the day (to the degree I allow Him). J.I. Packer wrote a seminal book on the topic. In it he says something very true: “Once you become aware that the main business that you are here for is to know God, most of life’s problems fall into place of their own accord.” So, I am committed to growing in the grace of knowledge of Jesus Christ daily through Bible reading, prayer, and teaching from other pastors, friends, and family members. How about you? I don’t want God to be a stranger when I ultimately meet Him face to face. All of this allows me a view of God that is still somewhat murky, not perfectly clear. But one day, I will know Him much, much better. How wonderful it will be.

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. 1 Corinthians 13:12 NLT

How satisfied am I right now with my limited knowledge of God? Am I pursuing a relationship with Him as excitedly as I once did?

God, as this day begins- I think I have taken for granted our friendship, Your love and affection, and the access which You afford me. Please forgive my inadequate zeal. I remember how amazed I first was with everything Jesus said and did. May that feeling and understanding fill my heart with joy today. As certain as I am that one day I will know You, even as I am known,… may I not neglect the opportunity to know You now! Continue to give me a hunger for the Bible, Christian teaching, worship and fellowship with believers.
