God Thinks Highly Of You

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;
What is man that You take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
Yet You have made him a little lower than God,
And You crown him with glory and majesty! Psalm 8:3-5

In moments of introspection I become aware of my weaknesses and frailties. Here, David considers how vast and powerful God is- David marvels at why God would even think of lowly mankind at all, let alone care for us. And then, stunningly claims that God has made us “a little lower” than God (or angels, in some translations). He cites the wonderful truth from Genesis 1, that man is made in the image of God… in Latin ‘Imago Dei‘. With that recognition, God has crowned us with glory and majesty. As Christians we realize that Christ alone is worthy of glory and majesty. But somehow God sees us in our glorified state and attributes His character and qualities to us. Wow! And I say with the Psalmist “O Lord, O Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!”

How can I accept both the privilege of being made in the image of God- and the responsibility?

God, as this day begins- may I consider your Majesty through creation and recognize in others and myself that we are the height of your creation- Imago Dei, the image of God.
