Idolatry vs. Faith

idolatryNot to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory.
Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.
Why should the nations say, “Where, now, is their God?”
But our God is in the heavens;
He does whatever He pleases.
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of man’s hands.
They have mouths, but they cannot speak;
They have eyes, but they cannot see;
They have ears, but they cannot hear;
They have noses, but they cannot smell;
They have hands, but they cannot feel;
They have feet, but they cannot walk;
They cannot make a sound with their throat.
Those who make them will become like them, everyone who trusts in them.
Psalm 115:1-8

The first command of God is that we recognize He alone is God. The second is like it, have no idols. This sounds so simple and obvious, yet most of the world is and always has been trapped in idolatry. Why? Because it is the antithesis of ‘faith’! Faith is believing and trusting in a God I cannot see. Idolatry is believing and trusting in a substitute that I can see and touch. I love the little boy who asked his principal, “Mrs. Sutton, my parents have me feed Buddha every week, but you know what? he never eats”. Our God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is the only true and living God!

Is my trust in anything other than God? That’s the big question.

God, I wholly trust in You today. I want no other gods before or beside You. Do what You please in me.
