idolsYou shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 10 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. Deuteronomy 5:8-10

Moses repeats the great commands of God. The second commandment is to put away my idols. When I was a new Christian, there were so many things still competing for my life, time, and affection. I love the acrostic IDOL: Image Dethroning Our Lord. An idol is anything and anyone that takes preeminence in our life, time and affection. This command brings with it iniquity for the idolater and lovingkindness to the faithful.

What idols remain in my life? Is my life a reflection of Your lovingkindness?

God, see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead in the way everlasting. If there are any idols, please reveal it to me, so that I might become free from it. You alone are my source and my goal. In purity I want to return the love and affection You have bestowed on me.
