In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:5-7
At the end of his letter Peter implores the shepherds or elders of the church to serve with genuine concern for those they are called to lead. Likewise, he says, the younger believers are to submit to the leadership of the elders. All of should be clothed with humility. Why? It allows us to be teachable. In the end, God lifts us up and we feel a closeness with Him as he meets our deepest needs.
How am I caring for those in my charge? Am I submissive to my elders? Does humility mark my character?
Lord, as I make my way into this day, I pray that You will use the Christlike character You are instilling within me to build young and old up in their faith. I thank You that You meet my needs and answer my prayers with provision, guidance and fellowship. I do ask that the people around me who are suffering illness, frustration, broken relationships… oh that You would heal and restore them. In Jesus name.
