Guard Yourselves From Idols

Over the course of my life there have been things other than God that have captured my attention, affection and devotion. I see so many people who are pursuing those same things that the Bible calls false Gods and idols. All around there are those exhausted from peering all day long into the deceptive pool of popularity (social media). Oh, and money (and what it can buy) has claimed an inordinate amount of time and energy of millions. The world is fraught with false gods and distractions that can never really satisfy. But, when the living and true God is known and understood, everything in the world that is good has its proper place. That’s one of the biggest reasons Jesus came into the world.

And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. Little children, guard yourselves from idols. 1 John 5:20-21 NASB

In what ways do false gods and idols still have a hold in my life? How can I grow in the grace and knowledge of “Him who is true”?

God, as this day begins, its the last day of the year. And new day and year begins tomorrow. Wow. As I take inventory today and look in the rear-view mirror of this year, reveal to me any idols or false gods that have quenched my love and fervor for You and Your kingdom. As I look ahead, clarify again how I might live this life in a manner pleasing to You. I thank you for all that is good in my life that has come from You hand- my lovely wife, children, grandchildren, parents, brothers, friends, and church family too. As You reveal Yourself, I will guard myself from idols.
