Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.
The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away.
And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.” Matthew 13:18-23
Jesus explained the great opening parable that accompanied his public discourses. While many did not understand His teaching about the kingdom of God, the disciples were privy to His explanations. In this case, there are four responses to the gospel (God’s Word)… and they are the same responses people have today.
1. I don’t get it! (he does not understand it) Evil one snatches away what is sown in the heart.
2. I can’t make it! (he is shallow) Affliction and persecution causes him to fall away.
3. I’m distracted! (he is afraid and allured) Worry and wealth make him unfruitful.
4. I get it! (he understands and bears fruit) One hundred, sixty, thirty other people benefit from his faith.
How good is the soil of my life right now?
God, I know I have been all types of soil at different seasons of my life. Am I growing, fruitful and understanding of the kingdom of God right now? That’s my desire. May many benefit from my life. As this day begins, may I sense what You desire. Please move in power and meet the deep needs of those with whom I associate. Would you lead Mauricio and his family through this day? Please be real and close and he waits for a miracle or decides its time to release his daughter to You. My heart aches for him, as does Yours.
