They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. Genesis 11:4-6
Given enough time and money, anything is possible. I remember my business partner saying that occasionally. The Bible says the people of this time were living five hundred years or more. They had unlimited resources (like bricks and mortar) and so they began the impossible… a city whose tower would reach into heaven. God thwarted their efforts and confused their languages. God’s plan is to reach from heaven to earth. All of our attempts to reach from earth to heaven are futile.
Are my motivations and actions a holy response to God’s love? What am I building that is temporary? Eternal?
God, I thank You for Your goodness. I am so glad that You reached down from heaven by sending Jesus Your Son into the world. He is my model in all things. I am grateful for the forgiveness afforded by His death upon the cross. May this day spent in Hawaii be a reminder that Your creation is beautiful, balanced, purposeful and amazing. Glad Eden joined us… how wonderful!
