Forked Tongue

forked tongueWith the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. James 3:9-12

James warns about the destructive power of our words. Too often we hurt one another forgetting again the incredible value God places on people. This is part of the way we love one another or fail. By remembering that every person is someone for whom Christ died, I can choose to bless them and not curse them with my mouth. If done consistently, I am a fresh water spring, bubbling up life.

How carefully do I choose my words? Is my heart consistent with the words I am saying? How much work does God have to do on a daily basis in this area of holiness and loving others?

God, I know You have done a great work in my life with what I think and say. I grew up cutting others down without regard. My mind can easily be sarcastic, yet You have changed my sense of humor. Do the rest I pray. Help me speak as the oracle of God and not with a forked tongue.
