Eye For An Eye

Who hasn’t heard the phrase “an eye for an eye”? The original context is within the Mosaic law related to wrongdoing and restitution. It appears that the justice was meted out rather immediately and without consideration of a system of prisons, after all, God’s people were in the wilderness. In a scenario wherein a woman is injured and a baby delivered prematurely as a result of two men fighting, the penalty could be a fine or even death for the one who caused the injury. In other words, the punishment should fit the crime. Life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, etc. Today, it seems that murders are released within six or seven years, thefts go unpunished at all, and victims of assault and battery rarely receive justice. This cannot be good for society. While I am all for grace and mercy, the unwillingness to prosecute crime will not end well in our society. God gave us better instruction! By the way, watch a great treatment of this topic with Dennis Prager at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrakW1DjApo

If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise. Exodus 21: 22-24 NASB

How has my sense of justice, fairness and law and order been developed? Am I more influenced by “equity” than righteousness? Where does forgiveness enter into the picture?

God, as this day begins- I am grateful for Your goodness and mercy. I have rarely received what I deserve. Your grace has been lavishly poured out upon my life. While I want to be a grace dispenser, I also want a society that upholds the rule of law and has strong boundaries on wrongdoing. Oh I pray for those in power to make laws, enforce laws, and interpret laws- impart Your wisdom from above so that we might enjoy the freedom we have. I also pray I might be of benefit to others today. I am praying about a wonderful solution for my dear friend Fran. I know You have the answers we need.
