Elevator Speech (Pitch)

Have you ever met someone who asks you that somewhat odd question, “tell me about yourself”? There is the “elevator speech”- you know, what you could say in a short elevator ride. Do you reveal something trivial and unique, do you boast, do you start with where you were born and include your life story? If I were to answer that I might say “I am a simple kid from Norco who has been blessed with a really great family- mom, dad, brothers, and then lovely wife, four kids, three delightful grandkids, two daughters in law and one son in law. Oh, and I came to know the living God at age 18 and have endeavored to love and serve Him, currently as a pastor, help people as a lawyer, and I surf with my buddies. So much more to say, but “ding”, the elevator doors are opening. You? Tell me about yourself… God told His people and here is what He said.

Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in faithfulness and truth; who keeps faithfulness for thousands, who forgives wrongdoing, violation of His Law, and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, inflicting the punishment of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” Exodus 34:6-7 NASB

How well do I describe God to others? How is my life a display of His character: compassion, mercy, patience and tolerance, faithful, truth-telling, forgiving, just, defender of the innocent, and righteous.

God, as this day begins- I remember afresh that what You do is a perfect expression of who You are. Thank you for revealing who You are by coming to live amongst mankind and loving, healing and teaching. Jesus is my model in all things, my source and goal, master and teacher. May I be a little more like Him today in word, thought, and deed so that I might glorify You (reveal what You are like). Thank you for the relaxing vacation time the next few days.
