Doubts About Jesus?

I think we all suffer a bit from our tendency toward creating our own “self-made” religion. We have accumulated and formulated for ourselves an array of ethical standards, belief about origins, the next life, and God as well. In doing so, many have rejected the claims and person of Jesus Christ as Savior. They are looking for other avenues and believe Jesus and Christianity are exclusive and too narrow. Other roads must lead to heaven, right? It is true that Jesus said “no one comes to the Father except through Me”. While that is singular and exclusive of every other way (He is the only way), I see it as clarifying. Don’t waste time looking at Buddhism (Siddartha Buddha said on his death bed “I still have not found truth”). Don’t get trapped in Islam’s misunderstanding of God and salvation. Avoid pitfalls of elicit drug use and so-called ‘vision quests’ or the vapid emptiness of Eastern meditation. God sent His own dear Son to show us what He is like and how to know Him, really know Him. God, through the prophets forecast His coming for hundreds of years and then Jesus fulfilled all that was written of Him.

When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You the Coming One, or are we to look for another?’”  At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind.  And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: people who were blind receive sight, people who limped walk, people with leprosy are cleansed and people who were deaf hear, dead people are raised up, and people who are poor have the gospel preached to them.  And blessed is anyone who does not take offense at Me.” Luke 7:20-23 NASB

John the Baptist even had doubts about Jesus. Its ok to have them. For his uncertainty, Jesus offered the confirming miracles that were prophesied about Him. I am sure in his jail cell, days before his execution, John took comfort in knowing that he had prepared the way for the Son of God, baptized Him, and seen the first fruits of His ministry.

How do I deal with my doubts in life? Do I take them to scripture, claim God’s promise and see the confirmations?

God, as this day begins- may I be an encouragement to those I see and meet. Lead and guide me by Your abiding Spirit. Help those who doubt be certain of Your Salvation. May this be the Merriest Christmas of all.
