Cross Carrying

cross carryingWhen they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus. Luke 23:26

Simon was compelled to carry Jesus’ cross. What an ironic privilege?! Jesus bore the cross and paid the penalty for the sins of all mankind. Yet, for a small time, down a dusty road, Simon the Cyrenian carried Jesus’ cross, perhaps in some small way, affiliated with Him in a very unique way. Jesus calls every follower to ‘take up his cross, deny himself and follow me’. Sometimes as Christians we get mixed up and think that suffering is cross-carrying. Often we suffer from our own doing, thinking we are somehow serving the cause of Christ. We ought to get the two straight in our minds.

What have I given up, endured, or avoided for the sake of denying myself and following Jesus example and commands?

God, You have made my life relatively absent from suffering. For that I am grateful. What can I do today that would say ‘no’ to myself and ‘yes’ to You and Your plan?
