But each man must be careful how he builds on it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:10-13
The Bible refers to us as God’s workmanship and likens us to growing plants or a spiritual building. Paul wanted any teachers to be careful how they instructed others and built upon the foundation of faith in Christ. There are a lot of wacky teachings out there. On the other hand, the Bible is God’s revealed word that instructs us how to live. In it, the character of God is on display, the great principles for life and decision making are presented, examples of right and wrong are within the narratives, and the person of Jesus Christ is presented as our model in all things. When we teach others to live according to the Bible we are building with the right stuff: gold, silver, and precious stones that will serve them well in the fires and trials of life.
How well am I imparting to others what they need from the Bible to live their lives in a godly way?
God, I thank you for the Bible and the truth You have given me to live by. Help me be diligent today to disclose the character of Christ, as well as Your will and ways to any who ask about the hope in me. Jesus, You alone have the words of eternal life!
