Black-listed Widows

A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man, having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work. 1 Timothy 5:9-10

Paul describes the qualifications of a widow who as to be cared for financially by the church. Its a fairly high standard. Its a woman who is of age and has served the people in the church over the years. She has been the example of Christ consistently. He goes on to list lots of reasons to deny a woman who is not worthy.

Do I measure up to the standard? What do I expect of the church? Are my expectations to give or receive?

Jesus, you are my example. You gave Yourself for us (the church). Help me do the same… to love Your people and serve them with fervor. Today, I pray that You direct my steps, fill my words with grace, and call to my attention what is most important.
