“The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?” And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet.” Matthew 21:25-26
On the second day in the temple, Jesus’ authority was challenged by the religious leaders. They demanded He tell them by what authority was He teaching and performing the miracles. Instead of telling them directly… he basically said it was from God, the same authority as John the Baptist, and if they had obeyed John, they would understand Jesus.
What authority does Jesus hold in my life? Who or what is my maximum authority… experience, my own thoughts and reasoning, or it is the Bible and Jesus? For me, Jesus life as an example, His teaching and the rest of the Bible are my maximum authority.
God, You and Your Word are my guideposts for living. Lead and guide me again today by the prompting of Your Holy Spirit and the knowledge (personal experience) I have with You in prayer and by the reading of the Bible.
