Are White Lies, Little?

Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.  Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife; and it came about, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is the kindness which you will show to me: everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”

Abimelech then took sheep and oxen and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored his wife Sarah to him.  Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you; settle wherever you please.” 16 To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, it is our vindication before all who are with you, and before all men you are cleared.”  Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maids, so that they bore children. For the Lord had closed fast all the wombs of the household of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. Genesis 20:11-18 NASB

I care what people think of me, somewhat. I think I am pretty done with trying to impress people who are not close friends or family. And I don’t really fear what man can do to me. Fear of man seems to be Abraham’s signature sin. Though we applaud him as a man of faith (and we should), it doesn’t mean he didn’t struggle. He told this particular ‘half-truth’ or white lie once before to Pharoah. There were moments of weakness like this, with Abimelech, that almost derail God’s plans. In some ways this was a final test before God gave Abraham, Isaac. We all could do better by simply taking God at His Word. God cares about truth. Jesus is the truth. His people should bear the truth without compromise. White lies are no small thing to God.

When I am weak, what temptations toward sin arise in my life? What promises of God can I claim so that His plans unfold?

God, as this day begins- its a day of corporate worship on campus and online. May You be lifted up. May we hear of Your mighty works. And may we praise Your name as the only wise, true, living God! Amen. Help me be a bearer of truth.
