Apart You Can Do Nothing! Really?

can do nothingI am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. John 15:5-8

Being connected to Jesus in a personal relationship makes it possible for us to ‘bear much fruit’! He says that apart from Him, we can do nothing. Is that true? At first blush, I would argue… “I can do lots of things without Him. I can tie my shoes, go to work, fix a window screen.” To that, a friend reminded me of two important truths: 1) Even the life and energy I have is a gift from God. 2) Anything that matters for eternity (the building of God’s kingdom) will only be accomplished by His will, His power in us, and by His grace. So, in a very real sense, I can do nothing apart from Him. And who would want to?

Am I connected to the vine? What evidence or fruit is God bearing out through my life and devotion?

Lord Jesus, I desire to glorify the Father. You alone make it possible. As this day unfolds, I pray that much fruit will be born out. Please lead and guide me. Thank you for the fun ahead tonight as Kaenan and I get to hang out.
