But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not shamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:16
People of faith may love their country so much they would lay down their lives defending it. But deep in our hearts is a love for the ruler of another country – God Himself. Jesus said, my kingdom is not of this world. So we have within us a longing to be in that country – heaven.
As much as I love America, and I do… how much affection do I reserve for the place and people with whom I will spend eternity? I would like to think my mindset is in balance. Its ultimately a reflection of my faith. The more I desire that better country, the more useful I am to God in this country.
God, thank you that what happens here and now can be counted for eternity. Help me keep my affections on You and my true citizenship.
